LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game for PSP is similar to the console game, but features simpler graphics, fewer and smaller levels with their own level and puzzle design, and a unique dueling mechanic.
The game allows players to play through events of the four Pirates of the Caribbean films, released as a tie-in with On Stranger Tides . Cutscenes from the console version are partly reused, partly newly done to fit in with the different design. The handheld version features only four levels per movie compared to the console's five.
Actual gameplay follows the standard template of earlier LEGO games: players move through the levels playing as several characters with different abilities, whose skills must be combined in order to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. Collecting LEGO studs, bricks and other items like medallions and rum bottles allows the unlocking of bonuses. A unique feature of the handheld version are pirate duels: when prompted, players have to press a button rapidly, which is then followed by a quick-time event, for which two out of three of the indicated buttons must be hit for a successful strike against the enemy.
The PSP version has some multiplayer functionality: it supports the StreetPass feature for collecting Play Coins by walking, which can be spent to buy characters. These characters can then be used in Pirate Duels (using the same gameplay mechanic as in single player mode) against other PSP users, with the winner earning more Play Coins.

How to Play
Getting Started
Set up your PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system according to the instructions in the manual supplied with the system. Turn the system on. The power indicator lights up in green and the home menu is displayed.
Press the OPEN latch to open the disc cover. Insert the LEGO® Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game disc with the label facing away from the system, slide until fully inserted, and close the disc cover.
From the PSP® system's home menu, select the Game icon and then the UMD icon. A thumbnail for the software is displayed. Select the thumbnail and press the ⓧ button of the PSP® system to start the software. Follow the on-screen instructions and refer to this manual for information on using the software.
NOTICE: Do not eject a UMD® while it is playing.
Memory Stick Duo
Warning! Keep Memory Stick Duo media out of reach of small children, as the media could be swallowed by accident.
To save game settings and progress, insert a Memory Stick Duo into the memory stick slot of your PSP® system. You can load saved game data from the same memory stick or any Memory Stick Duo containing previously saved games.
The Port
The Port is the hub of your game world where waters are calm. From here you venture to sea, first aboard Captain Sparrow's Black Pearl and eventually Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge.

Story Mode: Jump aboard Story Mode to follow the course set by Captain Jack Sparrow through all four Pirates movies.

Free Play: After you've completed a level in Story Mode, you can replay it here. Captain your crew well and claim cleverly hidden Ship Bottles and LEGO Studs.
Other Places
•
Souvenir Shop: Have a word with the Innkeeper at the Inn to visit the Shop. Spend your loot on unlocked characters for use in Free Play, or buy Hints, or Red Brick Extras and watch unlocked cut scenes. Or, peer into the Mini-Kit viewer and have a stare at Mini-Kit models you have pirated so far.

Character Customizer: Visit the Character Customizer to create a character to use in Free Play mode with a selection of LEGO Studs you have unlocked.

Items & Weapons
LEGO Studs
LEGO Studs are scattered throughout the game and can be collected to spend in the Souvenir Shop. Collecting enough of them in a level awards the title of True Pirate.
Red Bricks
Red Bricks unlock special extras, such as stud multipliers and special abilities, which can be purchased in the Shop. They can be activated during gameplay through the Extras option in the Pause Menu.
Character Tokens
These tokens unlock additional crew members that can be purchased in the Shop. Once purchased, these new characters join your crew in Free Play.
Ship Bottles
There are 10 Ship Bottles to collect in each level, with eight hidden for you to find. Two additional Bottles are awarded for achieving True Pirate in Story and Free Play modes.
