1-2 Passes
Double tap the button to perform a 1-2 pass. The user will retain control of the passing player and can move him to a new position.
The player originally passed to will play the ball back ahead of the user's player so he can run onto the ball. This is an excellent way of beating a defense massed on the edge of its own area.
Block Tackle
Press the button when close to the opposition to perform a tackle.
Headed/Volleyed Pass
Tap the button when the ball is in the air to perform a header, a volley or a simple sidefoot pass.
Button
Quick Shot
Players have different shooting abilities, and tapping the button will release a shot based on their skill level. Shots can be attempted from anywhere, but any made from wide positions or while facing away from the target are likely to lack accuracy.
Aimed Shooting
Hold the button until the power meter enters the red sector. This determines the height of the shot; the longer the button is depressed the higher the shot.
Using the up/down or left/right Directional buttons while the shoot button is depressed places the shot, otherwise it will be hit towards the center of the goal.
Panic Clearance
If your half of the pitch is under siege, tap the button to clear the ball up field.
Headed/Volleyed Shot/Clearance
Tap the ■ button when the ball is in the air to automatically shoot or clear the ball – depending on which area of the pitch your player is – using a header or a volley.
● Button
Kick
The longer the ● button is held the further the ball will travel, no players are automatically targeted. Used well it can put players clear behind the defense or to switch play from one wing to the other.
Kick Redirection
Press the ● button to start the kick or chip. Press a Directional button that is next to the direction you were running in. The longer this Directional button is held the more the ball will be redirected towards that side of the player.
Sliding Tackle
When the opposition have possession of the ball this prompts the nearest player to slide towards an opponent in an attempt to gain possession. Sliding tackles should only be used when facing your opponent.
If used from behind, the tackler is likely to foul his target, often resulting in a booking or sending off.
▲ Button
Change Player
While the opposition has the ball, press the ▲ button to change the player currently under control.
Chip
Chipped shots have a higher elevation than normal kicks and are an excellent way of passing into space beyond defenders. The length the ▲ button is depressed and the player's running speed determines the length and height of the chip.
Tapping the button will make the player flick the ball up to allow a volley to be hit.
Chip Redirection
Works in the same way as a Kick.
L1 Button
Long Pass
Used to seek out the forward line. The longer the L1 button is depressed, the longer the pass will be.
Crossing
When on the outskirts of the penalty area, hold down the L1 button. The longer the button is held down, the further the ball will be hit towards the goal's far post.
Note: It is also possible to redirect crosses by using the left/right Directional buttons (depending on which end you are targeting) while the L1 button is depressed. This aims crosses towards or away from the goal.
Foul Tackle
When defending, tapping the L1 button instigates a deliberate foul. If noticed by the referee this will usually result in a booking or sending off.
START Button: Pause
The Start button can be used to pause the game at any time, and opens the game's menu screen. Use the up/down Directional buttons to highlight each option, and the button is used to select it.
Resume
Returns to the game.
Action Replay
Viva Soccer automatically stores the last six seconds of action, and the replay mode allows the user to replay these from any angle. A flashing R appears in the top-right corner of the screen when the Replay mode is selected, and the Directional buttons are used to zoom and move the camera in and around the replayed action.
Pressing the button at any time will start or stop a replay.
The Replay can be viewed frame by frame by pressing the L1 or R1 buttons to play it backwards and forwards. Alternatively, holding down the L2 or R2 button will rewind or fast-forward the action. Pressing the Start button will return to the game menu.
