Xenosaga: Episode I - Der Wille zur Macht is a Japanese-style sci-fi role-playing game set in the 22nd century. Humanity has long left Earth, now known as Lost Jerusalem, and its fate is unknown. A mysterious race of aliens, Gnosis, has emerged, and the Vector Corporation seeks to develop an android, KOS-MOS, to counter them.
The story follows Shion Uzuki, a young engineer leading the KOS-MOS project, who becomes embroiled in a complex conspiracy involving the terrorist U-TIC organization and other mysterious figures. As she delves deeper into the mystery, Shion realizes that the Gnosis attack was just one part of a larger scheme.
The gameplay is similar to Xenogears, with combo attacks, AP and EP gauges, and a visible enemy list. Battles can be avoided, and the player must make strategic decisions based on who will act next. A rolling slot moves with each turn, conferring bonuses or penalties depending on the action taken.
Each character has a unique tree of ether spells they can learn by spending ether points earned in battle. Lower spells require higher-level spells to be purchased first. Characters can also purchase and learn spells from other characters that can afford double its normal cost.
The Anti-Gnosis Weapon Systems can be equipped with different weapons and accessories, which can be used in combat if a character has enough AP on the turn. The game features a deep battle system, complex storyline, and extensive character customization options.
