Escape Dead Island is a spin-off from the main Dead Island series, outside of the main canon, and it is done by a different developer. Unlike the main series it is played from a third-person perspective. The visuals are changed to a cel shaded look with action words that appear on the screen similar to comic books.
The story follows Cliff Calo who travels to the Banoi archipelago, mainly the Narapela island, to investigate strange events. His main goal is to gather evidence by taking pictures with his camera, proving the Geopharm corporation is active on the islands. The game's tutorial takes place before the rest of the game where the player controls the operative Kilo Two who infiltrates a Geopharm facility to discover the identity of the mole.
The gameplay involves a linear set of objectives, with many locations blocked off until a specific point in the story. Calo can attack with melee weapons and minor gunplay, but due to scarce ammunition, stealth is often necessary to sneak up on enemies. Infected humans wander about the ravaged tropical setting, reacting to movement and sound.
Calo's movements are controlled by actions such as sprinting, dodging, crouching, kicking, and pushing infected out of the way. A stamina meter limits the number of attacks Calo can make before needing to wait for it to refill. The game lacks RPG elements or an upgradable character system, with weapons provided at certain points in the game.
Calo can use a rope and grappling hook to navigate the environment, while keycards are needed to open doors. Overall, Escape Dead Island offers a unique experience within the Dead Island series, with its cel shaded visuals and linear gameplay.
