Escape Dead Island is a spin-off from the main Dead Island series, outside of the main canon, done by a different developer. The game is played from a third-person perspective with cel shaded visuals and action words on the screen like comic books. In this survival action game, the player controls Cliff Calo who travels to the Banoi archipelago, mainly Narapela island, to investigate strange events. His main goal is to gather evidence by taking pictures with his camera, proving the Geopharm corporation is active on the islands.
The gameplay follows a linear set of objectives, with many locations blocked off until a specific point in the story. The player must use stealth to sneak up and kill enemies in groups, as attacking them can be deadly due to scarce ammunition. Calo has melee attacks that can be combined into combos, and he can dodge, crouch, sprint, kick, and push infected out of his way. However, stamina meters near the bottom of the screen drain after attacks, requiring the player to wait a few seconds for it to refill.
The game lacks RPG elements and an upgradable character system, with weapons provided at certain points in the game. Calo can use a rope and grappling hook to move around, and keycards are needed to open doors. Familiar elements like ravaged tropical settings and infected humans return, but the gameplay is more action-oriented than open-world exploration.
