Ghostbusters: The Video Game is the first game in almost 20 years based on the Ghostbusters universe and features the actual voices of the original cast: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Earnie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton, as well as Janine Melnitz , reprising her role. The game also features the soundtrack from the first two films, composed by Elmer Bernstein.
The story takes place in 1991, two years after the Ghostbusters vanquished Vigo and prevented him from taking over the world. The team has been overrun by spirits appearing in the city and decides to add a fifth member. This is where the player will step in, taking the place of the new cadet hired to test Egon's new equipment.
The player must use the proton beam to wear down ghosts, then set out a trap and guide it towards the spirit before releasing the ghost. The player can also unlock new equipment, upgrade items by acquiring money for catching ghosts, and track spirits using the P.K.E. meter. The slime cannon is used to free possessed people, allowing safe capture of ghosts without harming them.
The game features both pre-rendered and in-game cutscenes, offering a more realistic look compared to its Wii and PS2 iterations. There are also online multiplayer modes that allow players to meet up with friends online and team up.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game was released on the PlayStation 3 in June 2009, marking a return to the series after nearly two decades of absence.
