The gameplay includes a new first-person fighting engine where players can grab opponents by their jersey. They can kick the puck with their feet or shield it with their body, and even rough up smaller players. Intimidating puck carriers can lead to turnovers and mistakes. Certain actions can now be performed or finished after the referee blows the whistle.

In Be A GM Mode, players act as a manager, drafting, signing, and trading players to build a career. The Stanley Cup can also be won through the Battle for the Cup Mode, with teams competing in a 1, 3, 5, or 7 game elimination round.
