Operation C is a Game Boy action-adventure game that follows a Rambo-esque character on a mission to defeat enemies and collect upgrades. The game introduces the character of Black Viper to the series' storyline, which would later be featured in Contra 4.
The gameplay involves side-scrolling shooting, with an emphasis on collecting weapon bonuses and upgrading the player's arsenal. The Spread Gun can be upgraded from three to five shots, while a new Hunter Gun is introduced. Players will also encounter platform elements, such as jumping puzzles and moving platforms, which require precise timing to navigate.
