Life Is Strange: Before the Storm is an episodic adventure series consisting of three episodes released over time. The game follows Chloe Price, a teenager living in Arcadia Bay, as she forms an unlikely friendship with Rachel Amber, a popular girl who seems to be the opposite of the rebellious Chloe. The gameplay is identical to the first game, with the player guiding Chloe through different environments and solving small environment-based puzzles. The story focuses on developing relationships between characters, and certain choices and actions have consequences that influence the plot. The player can move Chloe around freely and interact with her surroundings, highlighting points of interest in white.
Game elements carried over from the first game include a journal that is updated as the story develops, biographies for Chloe's friends and family members, and background information through texts on her cell phone. However, the time rewinding power present in the first game is not available to Chloe.
The game introduces a new backtracking mechanic, where conversations are used to progress through the story. The player must choose the right answers to unlock new dialogue options, with a timer adding pressure to make decisions quickly. This mechanic is similar to the insult swordfighting from the Monkey Island series in some ways.
