Windjammers is based on the real-life sport of Saucer Tennis or Frisbee Tennis. Two players face off in an arena with a low net in the middle. Points are scored by throwing a disc into the goals behind a player or whenever the opponent is not able to catch the disc in time. There are two moves: a regular throw and a lob. By using quarter-circle movement, players can also add effect to the throw. To catch difficult discs, they can slide to reach them faster.
The game features six characters to choose from, each with specific abilities and their own court fit for their skills. A single game consists of short sets of 30 seconds or 45 seconds. The game is won after winning two sets or sudden death after two draws.
For a futuristic touch, signature moves are added. To charge the meter used for special moves, players need to block, toss, or lob the disc and then charge while it's in the air. These moves can be countered and sometimes they knock an opponent into the goal.
In-between levels, two mini-games are included: playing fetch with a dog and Flying Disc Bowling.
