The Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance game follows a similar story to its console counterpart, but also features several key differences in presentation and gameplay mechanics.
The handheld GameBoy Advance version of the game uses an isometric perspective with two-dimensional graphics due to the limitations of the platform. The gameplay system remains largely intact from the console release, including the action RPG elements, but there are some notable exceptions. In this version, the player character is unable to jump, adding a new layer of strategy to the gameplay.
Another key difference in this version is the lack of playable non-human characters, with only human heroes available for play. However, players still have the option to assign their chosen human hero to one of three classes: warrior, archer, and wizard. Additionally, several side quests have been added to the game, as well as an enhanced level of interactivity in the city of Baldur's Gate.

Eldrith the Betrayer was once a celebrated general of Baldur's Gate whose pride led to a devastating defeat and subsequent exile, culminating in her cowardly execution by the city she loved. Driven by vengeance and fueled by dark forces, she returns from the grave as a vengeful spirit to curse the city and forge the Dark Alliance.
Story
Introduction
Have you not heard of Eldrith the Betrayer, the Traress of Swords, Eldrith of the Westering Sun? That she has been forgotten is an... irony of a sort.
The General of the Westering Sun
Eldrith was one of the greatest generals of the Sword Coast, commander of the Company of the Westering Sun, sworn sword and defender of Baldur's Gate™. She served with honor and distinction in the first and last seasons of the Sundering War. Her victories included the Crescent Port siege and the campaign against the Black Horde.
In all these battles, she was victorious. However, pride eventually burrowed into her heart, poisoning her spirit. Eldrith had fought too many battles and achieved too many victories, leading her to view the city of Baldur's Gate™ as her own.
The Great Betrayal
On the day of the Great Betrayal, Eldrith's company took the field against the Black Horde. They scattered the enemy forces, despite being outnumbered five to one. Although almost half their forces survived, most fled the field.
Eldrith was determined to pursue the retreating enemy. The Dukes of Baldur's Gate™ refused this request. They argued that too many good soldiers had been lost and that the people wanted no more blood and death.
Eldrith believed it was better to deal a deathblow to the Horde. She defied the Dukes and led her soldiers to their deaths. Far from Baldur's Gate™, she cornered the Horde in a narrow defile.
The Trap
Once their retreat was denied, the Horde proved more vicious than anticipated. Eldrith, fearful of losing the field, sent a messenger back to Baldur's Gate™ for reinforcements.
The reinforcements never came, and the Horde overran Eldrith's weakened troops. Eldrith survived, but many of the Company of the Westering Sun did not.
Exile and Execution
Eldrith became a creature consumed by fury. Wounded, she returned to Baldur's Gate™ to demand an audience with the Dukes. Instead, she was met at the gates and told that the walls would be forever closed to her and the Westering Sun.
She gathered the remaining Bladed Crescent and ordered her broken company to attack the city walls. She swore she would take the city from the Dukes and put them to the sword, calling it justice.
Eldrith's attack was like a charge of a maddened animal; it was suicide. The Westering Sun were slain almost to the man and driven from the city. They were hounded by the remaining troops of Baldur's Gate™ all the way to the Marsh of Chelimber.
As the last of her soldiers floundered and died within the marsh, the pursuing soldiers closed upon her. She was no longer recognizable, with blood caked on her armor. Dying but fueled by vengeance, she still struggled onwards.
Fearing her skills with the sword, the soldiers did not approach within arm's reach. Instead, they felled her from a distance with crossbow bolts. It was a cowardly execution, one without honor.
As Eldrith fell, she cursed Baldur's Gate™ and all within it. With her death, the Dark Alliance was born.

How to Play
START A GAME
Two options are available from the Main Menu:
•
New Game: Select this to start the adventure from the beginning. You will create a character by choosing between three classes: Arcane Archer, Fighter, or Sorcerer. After choosing a class, you can attribute characteristic points to your hero's abilities, with the number of points depending on the class.
•
Continue Game: Use this option to resume a previously-saved game.
BALDUR'S GATE™ HERO CLASSES
Before starting a game of *Baldur's Gate™: Dark Alliance™*, you must choose the class of the character you wish to play.
Combat and Actions
•
Select a spell or a feat: Your character learns spells and feats during the game. Select the most appropriate one for each situation by using the A Button in the Pause/Inventory Menu under the Spell/Feat tab.
•
Switch weapons: Press the R Button to change your attack method. The options cycle through Melee Weapon, Ranged Weapon, and Magic. These weapons and spells must be equipped or selected to be used in this manner.
•
Block: Use the L Button to deflect missiles or dodge hits. You can block with any shield or weapon (except bows). Shields allow unlimited blocking time, while weapons require the "Shield Expert" feat for unlimited duration; otherwise, the block lasts only a short time.
•
Break objects: Attack objects like vases and barrels to break them. Some may contain treasures such as money or items.
Consumables
•
Cure: Press the L and A Buttons to use a healing potion. This increases your health bar, but not beyond its maximum.
•
Mana: Press the L and B Buttons to use a rejuvenation potion. This increases your mana bar, but not beyond its maximum.
Enemies & Characters
Arcane Archer
Arcane Archers are archers known for their supernatural accuracy with a bow and the ability to imbue their arrows with magic, employing magical powers like enchanted, fire, and exploding arrows.
Fighter
A fearsome warrior who is tough, strong, and devastating in melee combat, with access to specialized fighting feats unavailable to other classes.
Sorcerer
A spellcaster who can create magic from raw inner power, possessing specialized metamagic fields and spells, but unable to use two-handed weapons.
Alyth Elendara
A half-elf who owns the Elfsong Tavern in Baldur's Gate, a picturesque tavern haunted by pirates and outlaws named after the mysterious voice of an elf woman heard at night.
Ethon
A smart and generous regular of the Elfsong Tavern who is always ready to buy drinks or help apprentice adventurers, often warning them to avoid dangers.
Fayed
A young priest of Ilmater, the God of the poor and martyrs, who is very proud of his condition and dedicated to his faith.
Jherek
A mysterious member of the Harpers with a strange attitude and bass voice, possibly supported by the Dukes of Baldur's Gate, whose presence signals harmful events.
Karne
A well-known outlaw who is a thief by labor of love and opportunist by nature, though the text is incomplete regarding his full description.
Items & Weapons
Base Attack
The amount of attack power your character possesses. You can increase your Base Attack by going up levels, with a high Strength, with a magical weapon and with the Sword and Fist feat (Fighter only).
Damage
The amount of damage your character inflicts on a successful hit. The higher, the better. You can increase your Damage by going up levels, with a high Strength, magical weapon and the Sword and Fist feat (Fighter only).
Shops
Shopkeepers appear once per act and allow you to buy and sell items. The price is influenced by the player's Charisma ability, and you should buy the best weapons available as your main use for gold.
Weapons Features
Weapons display several features, starting with a fist icon that indicates the base damage inflicted. This value does not include Strength bonuses, meaning the weapon can inflict more damage if the player's Strength is high.
