Blades of Thunder is a 3D action game about controlling a helicopter during military missions. The story revolves around defeating a terrorist organization called The Solar Martyrs targetting oil refineries in the Middle East.
The gameplay involves steering the helicopter freely, combining strafing with changing altitude for evasive manoeuvres, and using separate controls to move crosshairs. The main action usually revolves around taking out units in the air, on the ground, or at sea, as well as escorting tasks or protecting allied vehicles and buildings.
The game features a pseudo 3D environment with voxel technology on the Game Boy Advance, displaying a behind view of the helicopter. Three types of environments are used: snowy areas, deserts, and a generic European setting. A radar in the bottom right displays enemy units, which can be taken out to draw less attention.
The game has ten levels with primary and secondary objectives, each starting with a short briefing. Bosses must also be defeated, and there are three difficulty levels. A password system is used, along with power-ups that provide additional damage or the ability to fire multiple rockets in one shot.
