Sega Touring Car Championship is a racing game that builds upon the success of previous Sega arcade ports. The story follows a classic European Touring Car theme, featuring four real models of cars: Alfa Romeo 155V6TI, Toyota Supra GT, AMG Mercedes C-Class, and Opel Calibra V6. These cars have been modified for racing and come in two forms - some with four-wheel drive and others with rear-wheel drive. This adds an extra layer of challenge to the gameplay.
The gameplay is notoriously tight and less forgiving than previous titles by Sega. Players must calculate turns carefully to avoid skidding, making it a more tactical experience. The game features both Arcade and PC/Saturn modes, as well as Championship, Time Attack, and 2P split-screen racing modes. There are also three tracks, plus one additional track for the final race, with two viewpoints available.
As with other Sega arcade ports, there are additional modes, tracks, and cars to be unlocked by skilled players. A unique feature of this game is the "Global Ranking" mode, where players can email their times to Sega of Japan and compare them to other players around the world in special one-day events.
Sega Touring Car Championship was released on November 30th, 1997 for the Sega Saturn .
