The NHL 97 is a sport simulation game that takes part in the NHL league. The main change from previous seasons is the improved graphics, with new camera angles and polygonal players instead of pixel art ones. This gives the game a more realistic feel.

Other features include multiplayer support for up to 8 players through network or Gravis's GrIP system, as well as options to create new players and trade them around. The game also includes EA sports licensed multimedia, such as an "Goalie Mask Viewer" that lets you see the decorated helmets of goalies.
