Bomberman is set in a fantasy world where the black spaceman has kidnapped the beloved of Bomberman , bringing her to his chambers deep within his castle. To rescue her, Bomberman must navigate through treacherous terrain, including rivers, forests, and mountains, fighting off hordes of enemies along the way.

Bomberman 's abilities can be upgraded over time, allowing for increased range with his bombs. However, if he loses a life, his upgrades are reset, and Bomberman must rely on his basic skills to progress through the levels. New upgrades can also grant him temporary invincibility, increased speed, and other advantages in his quest.

Bomberman is a top-down action-arcade game that consists of nine levels per stage, each becoming progressively more challenging. The final level of each stage features a boss battle that must be overcome before progress can continue. Bomberman can move horizontally and vertically, laying down bombs behind him to clear a path through the enemies. However, he must also be mindful of his own bomb, as it can trap him if not used carefully.

Bomberman was released in 1990 for the TurboGrafx-16 console.
