Guitar Hero 5 is the fifth main game in the musical rhythm series. Similar to the previous title, Guitar Hero: World Tour , the focus is on a band-experience, with a lead and bass guitar, drums and vocals. The title is available standalone or bundled with the instruments.
The new soundtrack features 85 songs, including animated lead singers modelled after famous musicians such as Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, Shirley Manson, Kurt Cobain, and Matthew Bellamy. Players can compose their own songs in the included studio and access a wide range of downloadable content through tracks and full albums.
The game offers various multiplayer modes, including competitive play, Quickplay, and two new modes: Party Play and RockFest. The songs are divided into smaller portions, and players are rewarded based on specific conditions. Drop-in/drop-out play is also introduced, allowing players to join or leave a song mid-game without interrupting the action.
General new features include Challenges in Career mode, where players can test their skills against the game's AI. The gameplay is largely identical across different versions of the game, with some exceptions for the PS2 version, which lacks online modes and downloadable content.
The Wii version supports multiplayer through the global Wii address book, Mii Freestyle mode, and interaction with the Nintendo DS to edit videos. It also features access to the Roadie Battle mode, a mini-game-style mode where players complete challenges on the Nintendo DS to sabotage opponents on the console.
