Bowser and Peach are forced into a marriage at the altar, as predicted by the Dark Prognosticus book. The villainous Count Bleck escapes with the Chaos Heart before Luigi can stop him. However, another book, the Light Prognosticus, foretells of a hero dressed in overalls who has the power to save the universe from destruction.
Mario and his friends must travel through eight worlds in search of Pure Hearts. Each character has a special ability that helps the player solve puzzles. Mario can switch between dimensions to find items and secrets. Peach can use her parasol to float long distances and defend against enemy attacks. Bowser uses his fire breath to light things and fry enemies.
Super Paper Mario is an RPG with elements of action-platforming. Players collect points from enemies to level up their characters. Items can be used to attack enemies or gain lives, and players can buy more items with coins they collect.
To progress, players can shake the Wii remote after jumping on bad guys but before hitting the ground to gain extra experience points. They also use Tippi, a Pixl, to point the remote at the screen to find secrets. Other Pixls can be found along the way and used by pressing the 1 button.
