Resident Evil 5 takes place five years after Resident Evil 4 , where Chris Redfield is sent to Kijuju, Africa, to apprehend Ricardo Irwing, who is selling bio-weapons in the black market. Local agent Sheva Alomar joins him on the mission, and soon they are attacked by hordes of locals infected by an improved version of the "las plagas" parasite, which they call "majini". As the story progresses, Chris discovers that some old fellows are behind the whole incident.

The gameplay in Resident Evil 5 builds upon the novel concepts introduced in Resident Evil 4 . The over-the-shoulder view allows Chris to confront hordes of infected enemies, including those who can throw objects and shoot at you. Various guns, grenades, or melee attacks can be used to repel these enemies. This time around, Chris has a partner, Sheva, who accompanies him through the game and can be controlled by a second player, with both characters needing to keep an eye on each other to survive. The game also features a return of the mercenaries mode, where the player must survive in closed levels while defeating enemies to set up chains and earn points.

Resident Evil 5 was released for the Xbox One console on July 12, 2016.
