X-Men: Mutant Wars is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up in which you take control of the X-Men (including Wolverine, Storm, Iceman, Gambit, and Cyclops) and must fight your way through evil mutants, crazy machines, and boss characters including Magneto. You can change the character at any time during the game, as your power level decreases with each use.
The game features various levels that can only be completed by using the specific powers of each character. Changing characters also means one character rests while their power level increases. This adds a strategic element to the gameplay, making it essential to choose the right character for each situation.

This is a superhero action game where players control Wolverine and the X-Men. You must train and utilize your mutant powers to protect humanity from evil mutants seeking world domination.
Story
The Evolution of the X-Men
Humanity is on the verge of a large scale genetic evolution. Children all over the world are being born with a certain "X-Factor" in their genes, which grants these selected few unparalleled powers. This mutation in humanity's evolutionary chain has bred fear and distrust amongst the "flatscan" general populace.
Professor Charles Xavier, possibly the most powerful psychic mutant mind in the world, has pledged his life to a dream that one day, humans and mutants can live together in peace. In order to achieve this goal, Professor Xavier founded a very exclusive school nestled amongst the dense forests of Salem Center in upstate New York.
The Xavier Institute is where young mutants can come and learn how to control their powers. The students of the school have banded together to fight for the same dream of peaceful co-existence. These often misunderstood heroes are "The X-Men."
The Road to Peace
The road to peace is not always easy and there are those who believe that mutants should not live in fear, but should take their birthright as the dominant species on the planet. Magneto, "The Master of Magnetism," is one of many of these evil mutants who seek world domination.
These conflicting viewpoints have brought Professor X and his X-Men up against Magneto on many occasions, with no clear victor.
Due to the constant threat of world domination from these evil mutants, you as Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men must be in a constant state of readiness. The call to save the world can come at any time, and it often does. Good luck!
How to Play
STARTING THE GAME
Make sure the Power switch is off.
•
Insert the X-Men: Mutant Wars Game Pak into the Game Boy Color slot as described in your Nintendo Game Boy® Color instruction manual.
•
Turn the Power switch on.
Note: X-Men: Mutant Wars is for Game Boy Color® only.
MAIN MENU
Story Mode
Battle through nine levels of swarming enemies to face the bosses at the end of each level, as you unravel the plot behind a rampage of killer cyborgs.
Fight Mode
Use all the X-Men to defeat as many bosses as you can, in succession.
Password
Passwords are assigned once a level is cleared in Story Mode only. Passwords will allow you to rejoin the mission at the end of a cleared level. When a password is given, be sure to write it down.
At the Main Menu, select Password and press the A Button to go to the Password Input Screen.
•
Move the Control Pad up/down to scroll between the letters B to Z and the numbers 1 through 9.
•
Press the Control Pad left/right to move the cursor to the next position.
•
Press Start when you're done.
If the password is invalid, a buzzer will sound; please check what you have entered. If you don't remember your password, press the B Button to return to the Main menu.
GAME MODES
There are two different game modes to choose from.
Story Mode
Slash your way through the swarm of enemies in each level, making sure to find the key that will allow you to continue on to the next level, should you defeat the boss. Take your time so you don't miss any of the branches off the main path where you will find critical items for your mission. Sometimes the enemies are carrying these items as well, so be sure to knock a few down along the way.
Use your extensive arsenal of attacks, plus your fellow X-Men's formidable array of powers to blast your way through each level. Push the Control Pad and Select to switch to one of the other X-Men. Use the characters wisely because their various powers will be more useful depending on the situation. Be sure to collect the heart-shaped and other helpful items that the enemies drop once they are defeated.
Fight Mode
No story, no items, no underlings, no excuses. Just you and the X-Men against a stream of big, bad bosses that only ends when all your X-Men are beaten. Professor X will rank your performance at the end.

Big Heart
Recover 40 points of your HP.
Small Heart
Recover 15 points of your HP.
Star
Extra Attack Power.
Red Ruby
Raises your HP maximum by 10 points.
Green Sphere
Restores a fallen X-Men. If all X-Men are still available, it gives you 50 HP.
Enemies & Characters
HP
Hit Points - Once a given character's HP drops to 0, that character is out of the game until the next level.
XP
X-Power - Power required to use the X-Men's special mutant abilities. Special attacks use some X-Power each time they are used.
WOLVERINE
A product of a covert Canadian experiment where his bones were laced with admantium. His animal-keen senses, healing factor, and razor-sharp claws make him one rugged animal.
CYCLOPS
Field Leader of the X-Men. Only the ruby quartz of his goggles can contain the force of his Optic Blast.
STORM
She is considered, in her home in Africa, to be the goddess of weather. Storm shoots cyclones.
GAMBIT
Adopted by the infamous "Thieves Guild of New Orleans." Gambit throws bio-kinetically charged playing cards.
ICEMAN
One of the original X-Men, Iceman, has the ability to freeze even the moisture in the air to create any shape out of ice. Shoots shards of ice.

Back Handspring
A Button + . Need to use XP to perform this attack.
Unstoppable Super Slash
B Button, A Button quickly while running. Need to use XP to perform this attack.
Lunging Knee Attack
While running, B Button + ⇨.
Flying Knee Attack
While running, B Button + Diagonal.
Power Spike
A Button + to High Backflip, A Button + B Button +. Need to use XP to perform this attack.
Super Speed
Accomplish the following tasks for super speed for the rest of the level: Use only the Super Slash or Power Spike moves to kill four enemies with the first ten seconds of any level. This must be performed on a main route and not on any side branches.
