Tecmo Bowl , released in 1991, is an American football game for the GameBoy console. The story follows the player's journey through 11-game single-elimination playoff action against the computer or a human opponent. With 12 teams of real NFL players from 1988 to choose from, players can experience authentic competition without official team logos.
The gameplay is centered around two main aspects: offense and defense. The top-down screen perspective allows for horizontal scrolling, making each play more engaging. Players control the quarterback before a snap, then hand off to a running back or work through their receiver progression. Defense focuses on guessing the opponent's next play and controlling a defensive player before the snap.
Tecmo Bowl features simple yet effective gameplay mechanics, including four plays for offense (two runs and two passes) and a basic power meter system for kicking field goals, extra points, and punts. The game lacks season stats and save functionality but includes a password feature to resume tournament play at any point.
