Tecmo Bowl pits the player against the computer in 11-game single-elimination playoff action, or go head-to-head with a human opponent in action or coach mode. There are 12 teams of real NFL players from circa 1988 to choose from.
The game has a top-down perspective and scrolling screen. Player graphics are large and colorful due to limiting the number of players per team to nine.
Tecmo Bowl features four plays on offense: two runs and two passes. The player controls the quarterback before the snap, then hands off or works through their receiver progression. Defense involves guessing the opponent's play and controlling a defensive player before the snap. A simple power meter system is used for kicking field goals, extra points, and punts.
There are no game or season stats to track, but there is a password feature allowing you to resume tournament play where you left off.
