In the future, a young net-battler named Lan, boots his 'personal information terminal'(PET) and prepares to hack into the network to battle net crime. Lan's PET is no ordinary network navigator. It is Mega Man.EXE, the cyber-identity, which infiltrates the crime-ridden network to battle destructive computer viruses. Defeat viruses in real time and collect Battle Chips program data, containing valuable weapons data and critical system info. Collect over 175 Battle Chips to help Netto and Mega Man.EXE restore peace and order to the network.

In this action-adventure game set in a network-saturated future, players control a fifth-grade student named Lan who navigates between the physical world and the Cyber World to combat digital crimes. By customizing his personal assistant, Mega Man.EXE, and collecting battle chips, the player engages in strategic "virus busting" and Net Battles against hackers from the criminal organization WWW. Success requires solving real-world puzzles, interacting with NPCs, and exploring complex digital landscapes to restore order to the information age.
Story
Background
In the network age, everyone carries a portable exploration device called "PET." This advanced personal terminal allows users to make phone calls, send emails, keep calendars, store data, shop online, and check news. PETs have become essential for everyday life due to their convenience.
Every PET uses a personality simulation program called Net Navi(gator). By customizing the Navi program, users can give their Net Navi a unique personality and even talk to it. However, as the network world expands, crimes like hacking and virus epidemics are raging. A mysterious organization called "WWW" (World Three) sits at the top of the criminal list.
To protect their PETs, people install Battle Chips encoded with battle programs. Inserting these chips arms your PET to fight viruses and hackers, a practice known as "virus busting." This skill is now so important that it is taught in schools. Lan, a fifth-grade student, and his Net Navi Mega Man.EXE are skilled operators about to meet their match.
Real World Controls
In your quest to hunt down computer criminals, you will move between the "Real World" and the "Cyber World." In the Real World, control Lan using the following methods:
•
Talk / Check: Press the A Button when standing in front of a person or object to interact. Continue pressing A to read text conversations or notes. If there is nothing to interact with, nothing appears. Note that choices may be required during conversations.
•
Dash: Hold down the B Button and press the Control Pad in the desired direction to dash.
•
The Cyber World
The Cyber World is huge and complicated. As you proceed, more areas will open up, though you cannot enter all areas at first. You will encounter various elements within this digital space:
•
Panorite: These devices are connected to the Cyber World. If you obtain their network address, you can travel through the Cyber World to reach one of these devices.
•
Link: Some Cyber World areas are dead ends where you may get stuck. You must find a Link to proceed.
•
Net Battle: Residents in town may challenge you to a Net Battle. If you win, the loser may give you a Link. Use these Links on the Cyber World to progress.
•
Shop: Shops sell items for Zenny, which you gain by winning battles and checking Mystery Data. Talk to a Net Trader in the Cyber World to access the Shop Screen. Press the R Button to view item descriptions, and press the A Button to buy items if you have enough Zenny. Note that Net Traders have limited stock, so look for shops in the Real World as well.
How to Play
Starting the Game
Press START in the Title Screen to access the main options. Use the Control Pad to select an option, and press START or the A Button to confirm.
•
New Game: Start a new game.
•
Continue: Resume a previously saved game. This option appears only after you have saved a game.
You can return to the Title Screen at any time during gameplay by pressing the START, SELECT, A, and B Buttons simultaneously.
Basic Controls
The Field Screen is the main gameplay screen in both the Real World (where you control Lan) and the Cyber World (where you control Mega Man.EXE). The following controls apply across these environments:
•
Move character or cursor: Use the Control Pad.
•
Dash: Use the Control Pad.
•
Confirm a selection: Press the A Button.
•
Cancel a selection: Press the B Button.
•
Talk to Mega Man.EXE in the Real World: Press the A Button.
•
Talk to Lan in the Cyber World: Press the A Button.
•
Jack-in in the Real World: Press the R Button.
•
Jack-out of the Cyber World: Press the R Button.
•
Talk/Check: Press the A Button.
•
Display Sub Screen: Press the L or R Button.
•
Read emails and chip data: Access via the Sub Screen.
Sub Screen Options
The Sub Screen provides a list of helpful options. Highlight an option and press the A Button to select it.
•
Folder: Manage your chips. Press START to display a menu for sorting chips. Use the Control Pad to select a sorting method, then press the A Button to sort. Press the L or R Button to turn the pages of the Folder.
•
Library: View a list of Battle Chip data. Press the L or R Button to page through and see all acquired chips. Names appear in place of "?" when you get new chips. The description of what each chip does is displayed to the left. The number of stars next to a chip name indicates its rarity.
•
MegaMan: Check Mega Man.EXE's status. The level indicates his strength and increases as you use power-up programs. Three types of programs are available:
•
HP (Hit Points): Automatically adds 20 to Mega Man.EXE's maximum HP.
•
ARMOR: Doubles the defense of Heat Armor, Aqua Armor, or Wood Armor. You can change armor in the Sub Screen.
•
BUSTER UP: Enhances the Mega Buster by increasing Attack (shot power), Rapid (shot speed), or Charge (charge shot).
•
E-Mail: Check emails identified by sender names and subjects. Emails marked NEW have not been read yet. Use the Control Pad to select an email and press the A Button to read it. Turn pages by pressing the A Button.
•
Items: Check your items. Select an item with the Control Pad to see its description.
•
Network: Use the optional Game Link® Cable to exchange Battle Chips or have a Net Battle with a friend. You can also save a network game.
•
Save: Save your current game at the screen showing information about it. To resume later, select CONTINUE in the Title Screen.
•
Return: Return to the Sub Screen.
The Cyber World
You enter the Cyber World by jacking into the PC in Lan's room. In this world, you control Mega Man.EXE to defeat viruses, battle bosses, and solve problems.
•
Jack-In: Connect your PET to an electric device to send Mega Man.EXE into the Cyber World. Stand in front of an electric device and press the R Button.
•
Jack-Out: Recall Mega Man.EXE from the Cyber World by pressing the R Button. Once jack-out, you will control Lan in the Real World again.
When a problem occurs in the Real World, it is likely caused by a computer virus. Jack-in to defeat the virus. Explore the Real World to find various jack-in locations besides Lan's room. You may also receive a special chip when you jack-in. Helping others in the Cyber World can help you find other jack-in places.
Cyber World Actions
•
Run: Hold down the B Button and press the Control Pad to move fast.
•
Talk/Check: Press the A Button to talk to a program or check an object in front of Mega Man.EXE. Check Mystery Data found on the ground for a bonus reward.
•
Talk to Lan: Press the L Button to talk to Lan in the Real World. He may give you hints when you are unsure what to do next.
Stay alert, as you sometimes cannot jack-out.
Battle Setup Screen
When Mega Man.EXE encounters a virus, battle begins. You must defeat all viruses in the battle to win.
To prepare for battle, choose your Battle Chips in the Battle Setup Screen. Five randomly-selected Battle Chips from your Folder are displayed in the Chip Select List.
•
Select a chip: Use the Control Pad.
•
View description: Press the R Button to view details.
•
Choose chip: Press the A Button to send the chip to Mega Man.EXE.

RULES FOR SELECTING BATTLE CHIPS
Usually you can choose only 1 chip from the Chip Select List, but you can choose multiple chips if 2 or more have the same name or chip code.
ADDING BATTLE CHIPS
Pressing the A Button on ADD allows you to gain more chips for the next turn, increasing your selection pool up to 15 chips by adding twice, though you must fight the current turn without chips.
SENDING CHIP DATA
Move the cursor to OK and press the A Button to send your chosen Battle Chip to Mega Man.EXE for use in the Action Screen.
LINK PLAY FEATURES
This section covers Trade (exchanging one Battle Chip with a friend), Net Battle (Test) where players can pick up objects, and Net Battle (Real) where the winner takes a chip from the loser.
BEGINNERS TIPS
