Mega Man, originally named Rock, is the main character of Capcom's long-running action-platformer franchise. Armed with his arm cannon, the Mega Buster, he has the unique ability to absorb the weapons of defeated boss robots. He debuted in the 1987 Nintendo Entertainment System game of the same name.
Created by Akira Kitamura, the character's early physical distribution saw distinct regional variations and cartridge productions. The original release of
Mega Man (1987) featured collectible physical variants, including the highly sought-after
Mega Man [First Print] (1987) and the
Mega Man [5 Screw] (1987) cartridge design. While the initial game established the series' challenging gameplay, its sequel,
Mega Man 2 (1989), achieved massive critical and commercial success, introducing a password system and a refined difficulty selection. This sequel saw various international releases, including the early
Mega Man 2 [Europa Version] (1985) and a subsequent wider release of
Mega Man 2 (1990).
The franchise continued to expand rapidly on the Nintendo Entertainment System with
Mega Man 3 (1990), which introduced key gameplay mechanics such as the slide maneuver and the robotic canine companion, Rush. Additional regional re-releases, such as the European edition of
Mega Man (1989), helped solidify the character's global appeal.
