Lunatic Dawn is a retro RPG that defies expectations with its Western roots, setting it apart from other Japanese games of its time. The game has virtually no story, relying instead on exploration and strategic combat. Players are thrown into a medieval world with little distinguishing characteristic, free to explore as they see fit. The player can choose their party's gender, race, class, and age - older characters are more powerful but have shorter playtime.
Gameplay is timed, with travel taking several game days. Providing food for the party during this time is crucial, as well as acquiring supplies in towns, which can be accessed via a Wizardry-like interface. The player moves through towns from a first-person perspective, viewing locations and selecting menu commands. When entering dungeons, the view switches to isometric, with large, maze-like environments and visible enemies.
