The story of Silent Hill begins with Harry Mason, an average man driving with his daughter Cheryl, on their way to the town of Silent Hill. A sudden event occurs when a cop speeds by on a motorcycle, which is later found sprawled in the middle of the road. Also spotted is a woman standing in the road, but due to dense fog, Harry cannot stop in time and crashes into a railing, knocking himself unconscious.
When Harry wakes up, his daughter Cheryl is missing. Noticing that she would likely go to the town for help, Harry sets out on a journey, not knowing what to expect from this eerie town shrouded in fog. The game follows Harry's quest as he searches through the town, looking for his daughter.
The gameplay in Silent Hill is centered around exploration and interaction with various characters in the town. As an ordinary man with no powers or training, Harry must rely on his wits to navigate through the town, visit different areas such as the school and church, and uncover the secrets behind Silent Hill.
The fate of Harry's search hangs in the balance - will he find his daughter and safely escape, or is there more to this town than a simple fog layer?
