Destiny
In another time, when the feudal wars tore across ancient Japan, an epic battle raged between two fierce armies. The sole survivor of the losing force was a young spearman, Imoto. Knocked unconscious by a charging horse, he sank unnoticed among his fallen comrades.
Regaining consciousness, he fled the battlefield to the safety of the surrounding mountain forests. Injured and lost, Imoto stumbled upon a remote village huddled beside a cavernous pit. He collapsed with exhaustion.
Imoto awoke, bandaged, in a humble shack with a small man sitting next to him. The man introduced himself as Akagi, the leader of the village Tengumura. He explained that they are the keepers of the Gate that holds the Evil One, and that fate had sent Imoto in their hour of need.
Shizuka, the keeper of the Talisman that seals the gate, had been abducted by the Evil One's henchmen. Because the villagers are not warriors, they cannot fight through the legions to rescue Shizuka and the talisman from the Abyss. Imoto resolved to enter the Abyss and fetch Shizuka.
Tengu's Last Trick
Long ago in the ancient Japanese Capital of Edo, near the bridge on the Old Kisokaido Road, a small fire burned beneath a tree near the water's edge. Weary travelers were always invited to share the fire's warmth on dark winter nights. No one who accepted the hospitality of the fire ever returned to the road.
The ghoulish hosts of this trap were a terrible Tengu and a crafty Kappa. Tengu would trick visitors into drinking a sleep potion. Once asleep, they would roll the traveler and drag them into the water. One December night, a traveler named Hokusai happened upon the trap carrying nothing but a drinking gourd and a silk purse. Tengu, hiding his long crooked nose behind an expensive silk fan, invited him to sit and offered him a drink of the wicked elixir from a dripping ladle.
Hokusai declined the drink, claiming his own gourd was a magic vessel stolen from the witch Hannya. To prove its magic, Hokusai twisted the cork and sipped a tiny amount. Instantly, Hokusai grew several inches, his kimono barely covering his knees.
The Trade
Tengu, amazed by the magic gourd, demanded to buy it. Hokusai hesitated, prompting Tengu to offer a trade of magic for magic. With the slightest flick of his beautiful silk fan, Tengu conjured a powerful waterspout that whirled and danced on the river.
Believing the magic belonged to the fan itself, the traveler agreed to the trade. Tengu snapped the fan closed, handed it over, and eagerly grabbed the magic gourd.
Wrenching the cork from the vessel, Tengu poured the contents down his throat. He immediately began choking and shaking his head, screaming that the gourd was actually filled with oil.
Tengu spit forth a spray of the liquid, which erupted into a huge fireball as it hit the flames. The roar of the exploding campfire startled Kappa so much that he rolled back, spilling the water in the dished-out crown of his head. Powerless on land without this water reserve, Kappa dashed for the safety of the river. The Trickster Revealed
Howling in rage, Tengu drew his sword and flew over the flames to attack. Instead of toppling the traveler, Tengu slammed into something as big as a tree and twice as hard. He found himself at the feet of a hairy giant who was admiring the beautiful silk fan.
Tengu realized he had been tricked by Tanuki, who had assumed the human form of Hokusai. Tanuki refused to return the fan, stating that a deal was a deal. When Tengu demanded a trade back, he threw the gourd at Tanuki's feet. The giant picked up the jug, smiled craftily, and plucked a leaf from the top of a sycamore tree. He placed the leaf in Tengu's hand, declaring it to be his fan. Furious and humiliated, Tengu could only mumble and kick at the ground as Tanuki returned to the road in human form. Tengu decided to move his treasures into a nearby cave and spend the rest of eternity underground.
