Reptile is a green-clad Saurian warrior who serves the Outworld emperor Shao Kahn. He appeared as a playable character in Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 4, and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, evolving from a human-like ninja into a more reptilian creature over the course of these releases.
Introduced with a unique moveset in
Mortal Kombat II (1994), the character distinguished himself from other palette-swapped ninjas by utilizing acid spit and energy-based forceballs. His narrative motivation throughout the
Mortal Kombat franchise centers on the resurrection of his extinct reptilian race, the Zaterrans. This desperate quest drives his allegiance to various villains. In
Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) and
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1996), he assists Shao Kahn's forces while secretly hoping to find other survivors of his species.
As the series transitioned to 3D graphics, his design and storyline darkened. In
Mortal Kombat 4 (1998), he serves the fallen Elder God Shinnok, sporting a more feral appearance. His tragic arc reached a climax in
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002), where his physical devolution left him vulnerable to manipulation, ultimately resulting in his body being possessed to host the dragon king, Onaga. Renowned as the fighting game genre's pioneer of hidden characters, his legacy persists through his signature stealth abilities and acid-based combat style.
