Digital Eclipse Software Inc. was established in 1992 by Andrew Ayre. The studio became prominent for its high-quality emulation of classic arcade titles for modern platforms, starting with commercial emulation on the Game Boy Color and Sega Saturn. They developed numerous retro compilations, including Arcade Classics for Sega Genesis and Game Gear.
The studio's early history includes software support for the
C&L Controls Championship Joystick in 1992. Following this, the developer diversified into porting complex 3D titles, notably adapting WARP's acclaimed horror adventure game
D for personal computers in 1996.
During this period, the company solidified its reputation by delivering accurate translations of seminal coin-op games. This expertise resulted in multiple iterations of
Arcade Classics in 1996, which packaged legendary arcade titles for home systems, including a distinct
Arcade Classics [Cardboard Box] retail edition.
In 2003, the company merged with ImaginEngine to form Backbone Entertainment, though the Digital Eclipse brand was later revived in 2015 as an independent entity. This resurrected studio pioneered the "Gold Master Series," creating interactive documentary-style compilations that combine playable historical ROMs with archival design documents, video interviews, and concept art, cementing their legacy in video game preservation.
