Extended Play Productions was a development team under Electronic Arts, best known for developing the seminal sports title FIFA International Soccer (1993) and its follow-up FIFA Soccer 95. The studio also worked on the action-platformer Chakan (1992) for the Sega Genesis. Their work on these early titles laid the foundation for EA Sports' massive FIFA soccer franchise.
The studio's early roots trace back to
International Soccer (1988), establishing an early aptitude for sports simulation. In 1992, the team diversified by collaborating on the
C&L Controls Championship Joystick (1992), a specialized peripheral designed to enhance the arcade experience of home console titles.
Following this, the developer focused heavily on the
FIFA International Soccer /
FIFA Soccer franchise. Beyond the initial Sega Genesis release, the team produced
FIFA International Soccer [Limited Edition] (1993) and oversaw the expansion of the debut title to additional platforms, including the 1994 ports for systems like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, and Sega Game Gear. This multi-platform push solidified the isometric gameplay mechanics and international team rosters that defined the early era of the series.
Additionally, the studio's expertise in sports game design contributed to the genesis of the
Triple Play baseball franchise, applying similar presentation styles and fluid animations to North American sports. Through these specific releases, the production team refined the physics, control schemes, and licensing structures that became industry standards for sports video games throughout the 1990s.
