Krome Studios is an independent game development studio based in Brisbane, Australia. Established by Robert Walsh in 1999, the company became one of the largest developers in the country, producing titles like Championship Surfer and the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger platforming franchise.
The studio's early portfolio focused heavily on sports and action-adventure titles across multiple gaming platforms. In 2000, the developer released
Championship Surfer (2000) and
Sunny Garcia Surfing (2000), establishing an early presence in the extreme sports genre. This was followed by a multi-platform expansion, including a release of
Championship Surfer (2001). During this initial period, the studio also worked on the medieval action title
King Arthur (2000) and the martial arts-themed
Tiger & Dragon (2001).
The company's signature intellectual property began development at the turn of the decade. A promotional release,
Ty The Tasmanian Tiger [Promo Not For Resale] (2000), preceded the wider debut of
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger (2000). This character-driven platformer became a major commercial success, leading to multiple sequels and establishing the studio's reputation for character action games.
Throughout the 2000s, the developer expanded its operations, opening additional offices and employing hundreds of staff at its peak. The studio specialized in licensed properties, porting existing franchises, and creating original intellectual properties for major international publishers.
