Originally established as Probe Software, the company became prominent in the 1980s and 1990s by porting arcade games and developing titles based on major movie licenses. They worked on notable franchises including Batman, Mortal Kombat, and Alien. The studio was acquired by Acclaim Entertainment in 1995 and was later renamed Acclaim Studios London.
Founded by Voldi Gailans and Fergus McGovern in 1984, the Croydon-based developer built its reputation on multi-platform versatility. The studio handled various adaptations of the Caped Crusader, delivering
Batman (1990) for the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Amiga, followed by
Batman (1991) for the Game Boy. These titles demonstrated the team's ability to optimize gameplay across vastly different hardware architectures.
During the mid-1990s, the developer expanded its output with high-profile side-scrolling action games and sports titles. In 1994, the studio released
Stargate and
The Incredible Hulk for major 16-bit consoles, alongside the platformer
Pagemaster. That same year, they also developed
Soccer (1994) for the Sega Game Gear. This period of high productivity solidified the developer's technical expertise in handling complex sprite-based graphics and physics engines across Sega and Nintendo platforms before transitioning into the 3D gaming era.
