The handheld version of FIFA Soccer 96 has a few differences compared to its counterparts on other systems. There are only eight national leagues instead of eleven, no practise mode, saving or team editor, and it does not have the license to use real team and athlete names. The technical aspects also vary, with differences in graphics, sounds, and controls.

Despite these changes, FIFA Soccer 96 remains a traditional soccer game. Players can choose from 217 teams (59 national teams) and various playing modes, including friendly matches, national leagues, tournaments, or playoffs. There are several options to set, such as difficulty level, weather conditions, or whether athletes can be injured. The overall gameplay style can also be adjusted to be more action or simulation-oriented.

The matches are played from an isometric perspective, and players directly control the athletes. This classic soccer game offers a range of gameplay experiences for fans of the sport.
