Established in 1992, Rage Software became prominent in the 1990s for developing successful sports games, particularly the Striker series, which was localized under various names like Ultimate Soccer and Eric Cantona Football Challenge. The company expanded rapidly, acquiring several studios before eventually closing in 2003 due to financial difficulties.
Co-founders Paul Finnegan and Pete Tyson set up the developer's headquarters in Liverpool, positioning the studio at the forefront of the 16-bit multi-platform era. The team initially found success by capitalizing on the massive popularity of contemporary titles like
Sensible Soccer (1992), delivering highly playable alternatives for consoles and home computers. This led to key publishing partnerships with companies such as Sega and Virgin Interactive, resulting in releases like
Pro Striker (1993) and
World Soccer (1993).
As the industry transitioned to 3D graphics, the studio invested heavily in proprietary engine technology. This technical expertise allowed them to transition from early 2D sports titles to advanced action games, including the visually groundbreaking PC shooter
Incoming (1998) and the tactical helicopter game
Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising (2001). Before its operations ceased, the developer also secured major intellectual property licenses, producing the boxing title
Rocky (2002) for sixth-generation consoles.
