Aspyr Media Inc. was established in Austin, Texas, and initially focused on bringing popular Windows games to the Macintosh platform. Over the years, the company expanded its business to include publishing original titles, porting games to mobile and consoles, and developing remasters of classic video games.
In 2003, the company expanded its publishing portfolio by releasing
Wakeboarding Unleashed Featuring Shaun Murray (2003), also distributed as
Wakeboarding Unleashed (2003), alongside the compilation
Activision Anthology (2003). These releases marked a diversification of the company's catalog into mainstream console and multi-platform publishing.
The mid-2000s saw the publisher handle major third-party intellectual properties. Notably, they published the action-comedy game
Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse (2005), also known as
Stubbs the Zombie (2005), with subsequent releases of
Stubbs the Zombie (2006) and
Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse (2006) expanding its reach. During this same period, the company partnered with Funcom to publish the adventure game
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (2006). Through these partnerships, the company established itself as a key distribution partner for independent developers and major publishers alike, securing physical and digital distribution rights for high-profile releases.
