About

Spotlight Software was originally established as a publishing label by Cinemaware in the late 1980s, famously publishing the North American release of the futuristic sports game Speedball in 1989. In the modern era, the 'Spotlight' branding (as Spotlight by Quantic Dream) has been utilized to publish and distribute independent titles such as Under the Waves, Gord, and physical deluxe editions of Scorn.
During its initial era, the label expanded the reach of European-developed titles in the Western market. The 1989 release of Speedball, originally created by The Bitmap Brothers, showcased this strategy by bringing the acclaimed futuristic cyberpunk sports title to North American Commodore 64 and Nintendo Entertainment System players. This established a precedent for bridging regional development gaps, a philosophy that persisted into the brand's modern resurgence.
Under its revived iteration, the publisher transitioned to supporting narrative-driven and atmospheric indie projects. Under the Waves, developed by Parallel Studio, exemplifies this focus, offering an underwater journey that explores grief through deep-sea exploration. Simultaneously, the label diversified into physical distribution for specialized releases. It partnered with Covenant.dev to distribute Gord: Deluxe Edition, a dark fantasy strategy game steeped in Slavic mythology, and collaborated with Ebb Software for the physical release of Scorn: Deluxe Edition. This physical edition of the biopunk horror game Scorn provided collectors with exclusive tangible media, including a custom steelbook, cementing the publisher's role in transitioning digital-first independent titles into premium physical keepsakes.
