The series began with the 1996 release of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, a top-down action-adventure game. It was followed by the 2002 3D action-adventure sequel Blood Omen 2. The games chronicle the vampire Kain's quest for vengeance and power within the fictional land of Nosgoth.
Silicon Knights developed the initial entry, which Crystal Dynamics published. A legal dispute over the intellectual property rights eventually left Crystal Dynamics with sole ownership, leading to the broader franchise. The original
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (1996) debuted on the PlayStation, followed by a Microsoft Windows port of
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (1997).
The sub-series expanded with
Blood Omen 2 (2002), developed directly by Crystal Dynamics.
