Blood Omen 2 , the sequel to the Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen series, sees vampire Kain assembling an army to take over the world. His goal is to reach the city of Meridian and claim control. However, he's challenged by the Serafan Order, an organized group of vampire hunters led by a magical lord. Kain is defeated and his sword, the Soul Reaver, is taken. After 200 years, Kain awakes to find a world he barely recognizes, with only a few remaining vampires left. The city is ruled under martial law, with strange glyph magic being used to power machines and fuel industry.

Blood Omen 2: The Legacy of Kain Series is a third-person action game with adventure elements. The player views the environment from behind Kain's shoulder, moving him in different directions, attacking, jumping, using dark gifts, and grabbing on to ledges. Kain's life energy depletes and must be replenished by drinking blood, which can be found by consuming living creatures. As Kain consumes blood, his meter fills up, gaining additional health. He also learns new dark gifts by defeating boss creatures.

The Serafan Order uses glyph magic, a deadly force to vampires. Kain will encounter areas with glyph barriers that bar his progress, and must find ways around them. Glyphs power machines and switches, and many puzzles involve creating a glyph circuit to deliver power to specific points. The player can see the path of glyph energy as it travels down its path, allowing for precise navigation.
