Youkai Dochuuki is a side-scrolling 2D platformer with multiple branching paths. Each stage is full of bonuses, secrets and alternate exits and the player must be economical with their savings to purchase items that will help them progress. Though Tarosuke only has one life, he has a health bar with sixteen segments allowing for multiple enemy attacks. The player can recover some or all Tarosuke's lost health with healing items.

Hello! I'm the protagonist, Taro-suke.

If you read this instruction manual carefully before playing, you can enjoy the game even more.

The Story
"Huh, where is this? It seems I've come to a rather unpleasant place."
When Taro-suke opened his eyes, he found himself in a strange world he had never seen before. As he looked around, a frog came from the other side.
"Well now, are you a new arrival? If so, it would be best to see the Lord of Hell quickly and be judged."
So it seems this is the underworld. Will Taro-suke be able to meet the Great King of Hell safely?
Game Content
"Yokai Dochu-ki" is a story about the protagonist "Taro-suke" who journeys to the world of hell in order to face the judgment of Emperor Enma. Until you meet Emperor Enma, the journey will be long and tough, and all sorts of yokai will block your path. Taro-suke will use his willpower to defeat yokai while advancing through hell.
Guide to Hell
Hell is divided into five worlds. To you who are visiting hell for the first time, let us tell you a little about what it's like.
•
Hell Entrance: This has the atmosphere of "First Street" in hell. There is a Gamakin-bun's Dice Dojo and quite a bit of activity.
•
Path of Affliction: Huge yokai such as Hake Jizo and O-Nyudo appear. To avoid losing, let's do some shopping at the general store.
•
Ghost Sea: Taro-suke will swim through the sea. The yokai in the water are scary too!
•
Valley of Judgment: This is the greatest difficulty. But if you can clear this hell, you will be able to meet Emperor Enma.
•
Samsaric Realm: This is the trial given by Emperor Enma. Will Taro-suke be able to get through safely and reach heaven?
How to Play
Hell Entrance
Explore Hell to meet Enma Daiō, the King of Hell.
To proceed to the next Hell, you must clear specific conditions. At the end of the 'Hell Entrance' course, a Red Oni acts as the gatekeeper.

Tarōsuke summons Momotarō

Operate Momotarō to make the attack
Money and Items
Defeating yokai drops money, which can be collected to buy mysterious items at the general store. In Hell, gameplay relies on accumulating funds.
Multi-ending
Round 5 is the realm of reincarnation, a place of trials granted by the King of Hell.
Depending on Tarōsuke's actions and gameplay content, the ending will change. There are 5 types of endings in total.

Avoid extreme temperatures, strong shocks, and forcing the card to bend or fold

Do not touch the terminals or wet the card

Do not wipe with volatile oils such as thinner, benzine, or alcohol

Tennyo's Puff
A strange item with an ambiguous nature, rumored to be a medicine.
Penbunzon
A penetration tonic that increases running speed and jump power.
Kappa's Webbed Foot
Allows the player to swim as fast as a Kappa when used underwater.
Rapid Fire
A powerful rapid-fire device available in 2-round, 3-round, and 4-round variations with varying prices.
Charge up and walk
A technique that allows the player to walk while maintaining a charge by inputting the direction key diagonally down.
Head-Over Jump
A maneuver to quickly jump onto a yokai's head to escape unscathed when there is no time to defeat it.
Toraji and Gonta
Support characters, a cat and a dog, who become reliable companions once the player addresses their hunger.
