Rakugaki Showtime is a fighting game where the player controls a character rendered as a pencil drawing, fighting through 3D arenas to defeat God Hand and restore happiness to Rakugaki. The main story revolves around Yukiwo, Sasami, Pitan, Tsubohachi, and their allies trying to escape the grasp of God Hand and take back their lives.
Rakugaki Showtime features a unique gameplay mechanic where enemies are defeated by throwing projectiles such as missiles, rocks, grenades, land mines, black holes, or smiley balls. Players can also perform various moves to attack, and activate Super Smiley Attacks by grabbing fully charged up Smiley Balls. Each character has strengths and weaknesses that can aid or hinder the player.
The game starts with four playable characters, but players can unlock additional characters each time they defeat God Hand, with a maximum of 16 characters available. A training mode allows for practice, while up to four players can compete in Versus battles for bragging rights on the original Playstation.
