A Brief History of the Jovian War
By 2025, Earth's natural resources were depleted. This, combined with rampant inflation from the late Twentieth Century, created a growing divide between rich and poor. Violent crime and uncontrollable riots ensued, threatening human extinction.
In 2031, world governments, led by the United States, turned to space for resources. The U.S. Space Mining division began operations on the moon, with other countries soon following.
In June 2032, a mining dispute between France and Brazil over Oceanus Procellarum on the moon escalated into a full-blown war. France deployed "heavy armor unmanned robots" (Over Kill Engines or OKEs), which proved highly effective, leading to Brazil's surrender.
The World Federation, a reformed United Nations, created the Space Mining Resource Probe Association (SMRPA) to regulate mining operations and restore peace.
By 2059, humanity had exhausted resources on the moon and Mars, necessitating new mineral sources. Probes to Jupiter revealed abundant mining opportunities on Callisto, Europa, and Ganymede. This ushered in a new era of human greed.
World superpowers intensified espionage to secure mining rights. SMRPA surveillance uncovered that unscrupulous acts were being carried out not by nations, but by a single corporate group: the Drakken Group.
The Drakken Group is a conglomerate of hundreds of the world's largest corporations, with over $8.9 trillion in net assets. They had significantly contributed to space resource development and now demanded their share of new SMRPA contracts.
An incident occurred when a World Federation ship fired upon a Drakken-owned space cargo ship to enforce the Mining Rights Policy. Although necessary to prevent Drakken from gaining an unfair market advantage, the public deemed the action unnecessarily harsh. Drakken-based media teams used a controversial NASA photograph of the incident to fan the flames.
The photo convinced average citizens of the SMRPA's overbearing tactics and hinted at future conflicts. Drakken journalists publicized the World Federation's dispatch of a multinational force to Jupiter, further escalating the situation.
In September 2073, in accordance with the Treaty of Belmia, the World Federation declared war on the Drakken Group. Drakken acknowledged the declaration, and an unprecedented war erupted between the World Federation nations and the corporate conglomerate.

A Call to Duty
You arrive at the ISS Geneva Headquarters, enduring the cool alpine air. Despite your dislike for Switzerland, the Chief of Staff's signature on your orders makes it bearable. You review your brief while heading to the elevator.
The brief states that despite lacking battle experience, your quick adaptation and strong learning skills make you well-suited for the urgent situation. Your talents in battle tactics and programming are also noted as superior.
On the sixth floor, you enter a familiar dark-paneled office. A guard waves you into the Third Command Room, where the scent of stale cigar smoke hangs in the air. A gruff voice immediately informs you of your new assignment.
"Effective immediately, you have been promoted and assigned as the 'First Commander' of the Europa operation. Obtaining control of Europa is vital to the World Federation. Your briefing and training begin tomorrow. Your participation is, of course, mandatory."
Your duty, rank, and next assignment are decided without your input, marking your initiation into this war. The three months spent traveling to Europa are a blur of goodbyes and cryo-sleep.
As you feel the gravity of Europa, less than half of Earth's, you proceed to the base. The barren landscape is littered with the wrecks of OKEs from previous battles, a testament to past failures. Jupiter looms above, a magnificent display of color dwarfing the headquarters.
Entering the command room, your training on Earth comes to mind. This war, fought for wealth, power, and resources, is one you fight simply to return home.
