Greatest Heavyweights is a boxing game that brings together eight legendary heavyweight champions from the world of boxing, including Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, Floyd Patterson, Rocky Marciano, Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey. Their likenesses and fighting styles are accurately recreated in the game.
The game features a unique blend of pseudo-3D visuals and side-scrolling gameplay, allowing players to move around the ring by scrolling the backdrop and moving the ropes. The camera also features a 2.5D perspective at the top of the screen, providing an immersive experience.
There are three main game modes to choose from:
In Exhibition mode, players can face off against each other in a one-on-one match.
Tournament mode pits players against seven other opponents in a single-elimination bracket.
Career mode allows players to create their own character and work their way up the rankings, taking on fictional opponents and competing in various exercises to improve their stats. As they progress, they'll face off against each of the eight heavyweight champions.
During fights, players must manage their energy and damage meters, which appear as images of their head and torso. If these meters become damaged, the player will lose health and risk being knocked out. Players can also perform different types of punches and taunt their opponents to keep spectators entertained.
The game is played at a faster pace than some other boxing games, with more detailed character animation. A replay feature is included, and the fights are announced by Michael Buffer's iconic voice.
