Aarbron, a young boy, was kidnapped and enslaved by the Priests of the Beast Lord. He grew up on drugs that destroyed his will, making him into the Beast Messenger, a powerful creature serving Maletoth, The Beast Lord himself. However, one day he saw a man about to be sacrificed in a ritual, and his face triggered ancient memories. As he recognized his father's face, memories of his childhood and tormented past emerged, filling him with hate for his captors.

Shadow of the Beast is a challenging platformer that combines side-scrolling action with side-shooter elements by the end. The player must navigate through levels filled with enemies and traps, collecting keys and activating triggers to unlock new areas or gain an advantage over sub-bosses. Aarbron has limited moves: duck, jump, punch, and a flying kick. Accurate timing is crucial when facing enemies, while some obstacles require precise jumps, dodges, or movements. The player starts with one life, 12 hit points, which can be replenished by collecting hidden items in the level.
