Checkered Flag for the Atari Lynx is a racing game featuring open-wheel racing cars. The game takes place in various American locations and includes several modes such as Practice, Single Heat, and an 8-race Tournament. Players can choose from different track configurations, including random starts or qualifying laps, and customize their car's appearance by selecting colors and driver gender.
Gameplay is similar to Pole Position , with a behind-the-wheel perspective view of the track and cars displayed as sprites. The game features various graphical representations, such as lap times, speed meters, and rearview mirrors. Players control their car using two buttons: one for acceleration and another for braking. Steering and gear shifting are handled by left and right on the joypad, while up and down controls the gears in manual transmission modes.
The game supports multiplayer mode with up to six players via ComLynx connection. If fewer players participate, AI-controlled drivers can fill remaining slots, allowing a maximum of 10 cars per race.
