Sonic Generations for Nintendo 3DS is a different side-scrolling platformer to its home console counterpart and is closer in gameplay to Sonic Rush . Classic stages are similar in feel to those on the other version, but with the addition of a homing attack to target enemies mid-jump. Modern stages are similar to the classic stages but are based more around building up speed and occasionally make use of multiple planes. Boss stages take place in circular arenas, while Bonus stages are similar to those in Sonic Heroes where Sonic races the Chaos Emerald through a tube.
The game's story revolves around Sonic's 20th anniversary, with the player choosing between classic Sonic and modern Sonic as they progress through the levels. Along the way, Sonic must stop Dr. Eggman from causing chaos in both the past and present.
Gameplay is fast-paced, requiring players to build up speed and use homing attacks to take down enemies. The game features a variety of stages, including classic, modern, boss, and bonus levels. Players can collect Chaos Emeralds to unlock new abilities and upgrade their character.
