Focused on the original trilogy of the Star Wars universe, LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy brings some innovations over the first title, making it more similar to its PC and console counterpart than the previous game. During the story mode, the player is joined on-screen by two other characters, and can change between them to use their specific skills to proceed.
Characters share a life bar of four hearts, with the rate of depletion changing according to each character (a stormtrooper will lose three hearts when hit by a blaster, Vader will take two or three hits before losing one). If a support character is "dismantled" by attacks, there's no problem, but letting that happen to the controlled character means a loss of stud points and a drop on the "Super Kit" gauge.
Gameplay has been changed to accommodate the lack of lightsaber battles in the later episodes, and so blasters are a lot more effective and fire faster, but have lost their "charge" mode. New flight missions are also included, which allow the player to attack both Death Stars, skim the surface of the forest moon of Endor in a Speeder, escape from an asteroid field with the Millennium Falcon , or draw wires around the legs of Imperial walkers in Hoth.
There are three major character classes: droids (unable to fight), Jedi (melee fighters capable of interacting with larger objects to uncover hidden studs and with different Jedi powers) and Blaster users, which can fire at an enemy from a distance, as well as assemble smaller objects. Gameplay remains a light jump-and-slash isometric game, with the goal being usually to go from point A to B, while pulling levers somewhere in the level.
Gameplay cannot be entirely completed without playing in Free Mode, as many doors can only be opened or even reached by using the unique special abilities of one of the 36 unlockable characters. To acquire characters for Free Play, the player now needs to accomplish three things: earn enough credits, complete a level, and get all "mini kits". Characters that can be unlocked include enemies and heroic characters like Yoda.
There are also additional items to be bought, including music, palette swaps, new game modes, lightsaber colours and hints.

Episodes
If you're looking to get right into the thick of things, I suggest jogging over to one of the three episode doors surrounding the bar. Each door is very cleverly named after a film in the original trilogy.

Each door leads to several different chapters, all of which should seem oddly familiar to those well-traveled. Once you complete the first chapter, *The Blockade Runner*, subsequent chapters will be unlocked, allowing you to move in parallel between all three episodes.
Gameplay Modes
After entering a chapter in the Cantina, you'll be forced to make an extraordinarily difficult choice between two gameplay options. Don't worry, I'm here to assist you.
Story
The developers of this wonderful game have spared no expense to prepare a Story Mode that follows the events of the original Star Wars Trilogy almost exactly. However, you'll only have access to certain characters specific to each scene.
Free Play
For the more adventurous at heart, Free Play Mode allows you to journey back into any unlocked chapter using your choice of characters. You can rotate between them at will.
While you'll certainly meet some worthy allies during Story Mode, other characters must be purchased at the Mos Eisley Cantina bar or unlocked via Mini-Kits.
The Basics
Before you go and get broken into tiny, plastic bits, you should know a few more things. Take a good look below - all of this information is crucial, indispensable, and frankly, very important.
1. Hearts - Keep you alive.
3. True Jedi Status - Collect enough LEGO Studs during each chapter, and you'll attain True Jedi Status. Maintain True Jedi Status for every chapter to unlock this game's innermost secret.
4. Mini-Kits - Indicates how many Mini-Kits you have collected on the level.
Pausing Your Progress
By pressing START, you can pause any near-death situation and view your progress. This shows how many Mini-Kit Canisters you've collected and how close you are to being the envy of all your friends by attaining True Jedi Status for that particular chapter.
Alternatively, you can merely ignore the conflict at hand and toggle through the following menu options:
•
Options - To adjust sound effects and/or music volume, adjust gamma and isometric control, or view the game credits.
•
Extras - This contains special unlockable features that can be purchased at the Mos Eisley Cantina.
•
Save & Quit - Save your progress and return to the main menu.
At the conclusion of each chapter, you'll be treated to a measure of your gaming abilities. This summary recounts all the characters you've unlocked for use in Free Play Mode, along with the LEGO Studs and Mini-Kit Canisters you've collected.
Tips & Maps
The Force
Jedi can perform special moves such as Force Transform by holding the R button while facing a highlighted object, or activate unique Force powers by pressing the L button while facing an enemy.
Building
Any humanoid character can use the Build action to transform piles of LEGO bricks into more useful items by holding the R button while facing the bricks.
Hover
Certain Astromech droids can hover to areas inaccessible to Jedi by pressing and holding the A button and moving normally.
Activating Panels
Some doors are unlocked by specific characters, indicated by an icon on the panel; face the panel and press the L button to activate it.
Disguises
Humanoid characters like Luke Skywalker can disguise themselves as Stormtroopers or bounty hunters to sneak past enemies.
Items & Weapons
LEGO Studs
A new currency consisting of small bits of valuable plastic that can be earned by breaking, blasting, slicing, or exploding objects. At the end of each chapter, they are banked and can be exchanged at the Mos Eisley Cantina to unlock characters, cheats, and other extras.
Mini-Kit Canisters
Rare, hidden items placed in difficult-to-find locations throughout each chapter. Locating 10 Mini-Kit Canisters in a chapter rewards the player with immense LEGO Stud wealth and the ability to unlock additional characters.
