The Paper Mario series returns to its 2D roots in Paper Mario: Sticker Star , with a focus on overworld movement reminiscent of Super Paper Mario. The game takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, where the annual Sticker Fest is celebrated. This festive event is marred by the arrival of Bowser, who attempts to steal the magical Sticker Comet and grants wishes to those who watch it descend. However, his plan is foiled when the comet shatters into six pieces, one of which lands on Bowser's head, giving him immense power.
Unlike previous Paper Mario games, Paper Mario: Sticker Star features a unique combat system that relies on stickers to defeat enemies. These stickers can be used for various attacks and defensive moves, such as jump and hammer stickers, which vary in power. Additionally, "Thing stickers" summon 3D objects that can be used in battle or exploration. The game also introduces the "Paperization" ability, allowing Mario to turn screens into images and manipulate objects like stickers.
