Ninja Assault is a light gun rail shooter set in ancient Japan. Princess Koto has been kidnapped by the evil shogun Kigai. Kigai plans to use her in a resurrection ritual. In the game you take on the role of Guren and Gunjo, two gunslinger ninjas.
The game was originally released in the arcades and later also on the PlayStation 2. The PS2 version has, besides the arcade version, one extra playable character named Aoi, three extra chapters in story mode for each of the characters, and bonus games.
The gameplay involves moving the player's character automatically as they have to gun down enemies. To reload, the player must shoot off-screen. First aid kits can be picked up during the game to replenish health. The game can be played solo or with a friend.

Game Guide
Extracted from the original game manual
This is a 2D action-platformer where players control ninjas Guren and Gunjo, or the vengeful Aoi, to rescue Princess Koto and defeat the demonic Shogun Kigai. Players will utilize a powerful "Mach Gun" to battle through Kigai's forces and restore peace to their devastated land.
Story
The Age of Provincial Wars
The Age of Provincial Wars was an era scarred by conflict. Evil Shogun Kigai ruled with an army of demonic soldiers, men caught between the living and the dead. He spread carnage and tyranny to conquer neighboring lands.
The Fall of Tenshin
The innocent nation of Tenshin fell to Kigai's unholy armies. The Royal family was slaughtered, but Kigai spared the beautiful Princess Koto. Rumors of her mysterious, prophetic powers intrigued the wicked Shogun.
He considered sacrificing her in his resurrection rituals, hoping to absorb her mysterious powers.
Guren and Gunjo's Quest
Guren and Gunjo, ninjas loyal to Princess Koto, were away during the wars. They returned to find their homeland devastated and Princess Koto kidnapped.
Determined to rescue their Princess and restore peace, they resolved to use the Nation's forbidden weapon. The Mach Gun, rumored powerful enough to kill even the Gods, was taken from its sacred shrine. The two ninjas gripped it vengefully as they began their quest.
Aoi's Vengeance
Meanwhile, a mysterious girl named Aoi traveled unnoticed in the shadows of Guren and Gunjo. Her father was murdered by Kigai's army, and she declared unyielding vengeance on the Shogun.
Wielding her own Mach Gun, she follows the two ninjas as they venture into Kigai's territory.

Starting the Game & Saving
This section explains Guncon2 calibration and saving/loading the game. Read carefully before playing.
How to Calibrate the Guncon™2
If the Guncon2 controller is connected, the Guncon2 Calibration Screen will automatically appear when you start the game.
On the calibration screen, aim the Guncon2 at the "+" mark in the center and pull the Trigger. Pull the Trigger as many times as needed to adjust your aim.
When done adjusting, press the A or B button to proceed. Your aim may be off if you play without calibrating.
2-Point Adjustment
The Guncon2 offers a 2-Point Adjustment for better calibration on wide-screen TVs. This is not necessary for standard TVs.
To perform 2-Point Adjustment, aim the Guncon2 away from the screen and press the Trigger + C button.
If using a progressive scan TV, the Guncon2 should automatically perform 2-Point Adjustment. If it doesn't, point the Guncon2 away from the screen, press the Trigger and C button to manually switch to progressive scan.
NOTE
•
Guncon2 does not support hi-vision, LCD, plasma display, or projection TVs. Some progressive-scan or hi-level TVs may also not be supported.
•
If Guncon2 controllers are connected to both USB connectors, TV type is determined by Player 1.

Tips & Maps
Shoot down projectile weapons.
Some enemies will attack with arrows or throw stars. If you see one coming towards you, try to shoot it down to avoid taking damage.
Increase your score with consecutive hits.
Hitting enemies and projectile weapons without missing a single shot counts as a consecutive hit, providing a bonus to your score. Taking an enemy hit resets the count.
Find the hidden secrets.
Fulfilling certain criteria in NINJA ASSAULTTM can open up Bonus Games and allow you to acquire new guns for use in Story Mode.
