LEGO Batman: The Videogame is a game that continues the tradition of adapting known franchises with visuals based on LEGO blocks. This time, it takes on the Batman universe, offering a unique take on the franchise as a whole rather than a specific movie or comic.
The story revolves around a new tale where a cast of villains has escaped from Arkham Asylum and are wreaking havoc in Gotham City. Players control Batman and his sidekick Robin to take on all enemies with typical brawler gameplay, exploring environments using gadgets like the batarang and grappling hook. The game features quirky animations and sequences that differ from the darker atmosphere of contemporary Batman movies.
The gameplay is divided into two main parts: the first half where players control Batman and Robin to progress through levels, and the second part where they take control of various villains such as Poison Ivy, The Joker, and Mr. Freeze. Each villain has unique powers, and their sections end with a confrontation with Batman and Robin.
Players can collect coins, objects, and hearts, and even though the villains can die, they respawn immediately. The game also features multi-player options, including drop-in/drop-out co-op for home console and Windows versions, although the PSP release is lacking in this department.
