Donkey Kong , released on the Colecovision in January 1982, was a groundbreaking platformer that introduced two beloved Nintendo characters: Mario (originally "Jumpman") and Donkey Kong. The game follows Mario as he attempts to rescue Pauline from the clutches of the titular ape before time runs out.
Players control Mario as he navigates through four industrial-themed levels, including a construction zone, cement factory, elevator-themed level, and rivet removal challenge. Along the way, he must dodge barrels, "living" fireballs, and spring-weights to survive. As an added bonus, Mario can find Pauline's hat, purse, and umbrella for extra points.
The game features a simple yet effective narrative told through cutscenes that advance the story. However, it's worth noting that many early conversions of the original coin-op game left out several levels, including the cement factory, which was often omitted.
