X-Men: Children of the Atom is a 2D fighting game and the first Capcom title to use licensed characters from the Marvel comic universe. It has six main characters and four of their enemies that are playable. The X-Men are Colossus, Cyclops, Iceman, Psylocke, Storm and Wolverine. The villains are Omega Red, Sentinel, Silver Samurai and Spiral. The two main bosses are Juggernaut and Magneto, and Akuma is available as a secret character.
The gameplay is done one-on-one with a traditional best-two-out-of-three match setup, with automatic or manual blocking. Similar to Super Street Fighter II Turbo there is an X-Power gauge of different levels, filled up when the player performs moves. When it is maxed out an X-Ability or Hyper X special move can be performed. Other general features are the abilities to super jump, roll away and aiming projectiles.

Extracted from the original game manual
Set in a world where mutants are feared as freaks rather than saviors, this game follows the X-Men as they fight for peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. The player leads Professor Xavier's team against Magneto, who seeks to annihilate humanity from his orbital citadel, the Avalon. To prevent global devastation, the X-Men must battle Magneto's Acolytes and newly allied villains while also resisting the mutant-hunting Sentinels.
Story
Story
They were born with superhuman abilities, into a world that looks at them not as saviors, but as freaks. At Professor Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, the mutant team known as the X-Men continue to hone their mutant powers in the fight against the forces of destruction. Their quest is to prove that they have a place on Earth and that humans and mutants can co-exist peacefully.
Far above the Earth in an orbiting space station, Magneto, the Master of Magnetism, sees a very different picture. He believes that the only way he and other mutants can survive is by destroying the human race entirely.

The orbiting citadel, Avalon, has been constructed by Magneto with a dual purpose.
•
It serves as a safe-haven for his dedicated legion of followers, the villainous mutants known as the Acolytes.
•
Here, Magneto's forces plan their all-out assault on Earth.
With advanced technologies and the combined mutant abilities of the Acolytes, Magneto plans to disrupt magnetic fields all across the planet. The results would be nothing less than total devastation.

Worldwide corruption of computer systems.
•
Complete shutdown of all power systems.
•
The collapse of every nation's communication networks.
These events would result in the extinction of countless human lives and usher in a new Dark Age for Earth's non-mutant population.
Professor Charles Xavier has trained his X-Men to combat just this kind of mutant menace. However, with the promise of a mutant-run planet, a frightening array of the X-Men's most formidable villains have allied themselves with the Master of Magnetism. Additionally, mutant-hunting Sentinels are scouring the planet with hopes of exterminating all mutants.
Even the uncanny X-Men may be doomed to defeat. History is about to change in the greatest battle mankind has ever seen.
How to Play
Starting Up
•
Set up your Sega Saturn™ system as described in its instruction manual.
•
Plug in Controller 1 for a one-player game, or a second Controller for two players.
•
Place the *X-Men: Children of the Atom™* disc label-side up in the CD tray and close the lid.
•
Turn on the TV or monitor and the Sega Saturn™. The logo should appear on screen. If nothing happens, turn the system off, check the setup, and try again.
Important Note on Disc Care
Your Sega Saturn™ CD contains a security code that allows the disc to be read. Keep the disc clean and handle it carefully. If the system has trouble reading the disc, remove it and wipe it from the center straight out toward the edge. To stop the game or display the Control Panel at any time, press the Reset Button on the console.
Other Button Functions
•
Throws: Get close to your opponent, then press LEFT or RIGHT on the D-PAD + Y or Z.
•
Guard: Press the D-PAD as shown on screen.
The Rules of the Game
The following rules apply to Arcade Game Mode (see page 10 for other modes).
•
Each stage consists of 3 rounds. The fighter who wins two rounds wins the stage.
•
Both fighters start with 99 vitality points. Losing all points results in a K.O.
•
If time runs out, the fighter with the most vitality wins the round.
•
If no winner emerges after 3 rounds, a final round begins. If there is still no winner, the match is a draw.
Getting Started
Press Start on the Title Screen to view mode choices. Highlight Arcade Mode and press Start to begin.
1. Select your X-fighter and the game speed on the next screen.
2. Select the guard system.
*Note: You do not need to set game speed if you have already configured it in Option Mode. The guard system is explained on page 15.*
Versus Mode
*(Two-player match)*
This mode pits you against a friend using fighters of your choice. Two players can even use the same fighter.
•
Select VS Mode to access the character select screen.
•
Pick a fighter, then set the game speed and guard system.
•
Set the handicap levels and stage location.
•
The battle begins immediately.
After the battle, fighter information is displayed. Select Continue to keep playing or Exit to return to the Game Mode screen.
Survival Mode
*(One-player match)*
Take your chances against randomly chosen opponents in a series of one-round, win-or-lose battles.
•
Select Survival Mode, pick your fighter, set the game speed, and prepare for action.
•
Fight one round; if you are still standing at the end, you win and face the next opponent.
•
You regain some vitality between battles.
•
If you lose all your vitality, the game ends with no second chances.
Group Battle Mode
*(Two-player match)*
Each player selects from one to five fighters for a set of elimination matches.
•
Select Group Battle and choose your fighters (1 to 5 per player).
•
Set the game speed, guard system, handicap levels, and stage location.
•
The tournament begins.
•
Fighters compete in one-round matches. The game ends when one player's fighters are all defeated.
•
A victory screen appears, displaying the fighting stats for both winner and loser.
The Option Mode
Select Option Mode from the Mode Select screen and press Start. Use the D-Pad Up or Down to cycle through options, and Left or Right to highlight choices. Press Start to return to the Title Screen.
•
Difficulty: Choose from 8 levels of difficulty.
•
Time Limit: Set ON to use a timer, or OFF for no-time-limit battles.
•
Game Speed: Choose Turbo 1 (slow), Turbo 2 (medium), Turbo 3 (fast), or Free Select.
•
Button Configuration: Customize button functions to fit your style. You can assign light, medium, or hard kicks and punches to Buttons A, B, C, X, Y, and Z. Special functions for Buttons L and R are set on the next page.
•
Sound Mode: Select Monaural or Stereo.
•
Data Reset: Delete all saved records and reset button functions to default.
Mid Match Challenge
If one player is battling in Arcade Mode, a second player can press Start on Controller 2 to join the action.
Continue and Auto Save
In 3-Round matches, a tie in the tie-breaking 4th Round ends the battle as a draw. When the continue screen (or scores screen in two-player games) appears, press Start before the timer reaches zero to continue.
The *X-Men: Children of the Atom* game automatically saves game data, statistics, wins/losses, and D-PAD configurations. To erase all saved data and reset button functions, choose Data Reset in Option Mode.
What is X-Power?
X-Men and X-Villains possess mutant powers that allow for special techniques during battle.
•
The current X-Power level is shown on the X-Power Gauge, located below the vitality gauge.
•
The amount of X-Power depends on how you attack and defend.
•
As you gain power, an aura appears.

Tips & Maps
Dash
You can dash forwards or backwards by pressing the D-PAD twice in a direction.
Landing/Reversal
When thrown, you can perform a safe landing or reverse the throw on your opponent using X-Power; Landing is performed by pressing ↓ + all 3 P buttons together.
Super Jump
This takes you higher than a regular jump, allowing you to travel farther left or right and perform attacks.
Spinning Retreat
Use this maneuver to get out of danger fast if you have been thrown.
Follow-Up Attack
After throwing your opponent, follow it up with a second attack while your opponent is still in the air or on the ground.
Auto Guard System
This system automatically stops any attack made on you when you are being attacked and not performing any other maneuver.
Master Your Counterattacks
Cancel your guard by unleashing your own special attack to stop an opponent's flurry, turning defense into offense.
Watch Your Face
Monitor the Face Panel which changes from blue to yellow to red as you take damage; protect yourself well when red to avoid being KOed.
Hyper X Attack
A special move performed with ↓ ↘ → + P + P + P, available for Wolverine, Psylocke, Cyclops, Storm, and Iceman.
Enemies & Characters
Wolverine
Combine pure, savage fury with indestructible razor-sharp claws and you get the X-Man known as Wolverine! With his adamantium-laced skeleton and claws, and his mutant healing factor, Wolverine is virtually unbeatable!
Psylocke
Psylocke's exquisite exterior belies the cunning warrior woman within. In addition to her fighting skills, Psylocke possesses telepathic powers- foremost among these is her “psychic knife,” which she can use to blast her opponent's nervous systems from the inside.
Cyclops
A no-nonsense man of action, Cyclops is the highly-respected leader of the X-Men- as well as their first member! His optic blasts, controlled only by a visor made of ruby quartz, make Cyclops one of the most powerful X-Men.
Storm
Along with Cyclops, Storm is one of the leaders of the uncanny X-Men. As her name implies, Storm possesses the mutant power to control the weather itself. Honor, duty, friendship and sacrifice mean everything to Storm.
Iceman
The brash and impulsive Bobby Drake is better known as the Iceman, a mutant with the ability to lower the temperature around his body to the point where moisture freezes. As a member of the X-Men, Iceman uses his freezing power on both the defensive and the offensive.
Colossus
Born and raised in Russia, this impressionable young farmer left his homeland behind to serve man and mutantkind- joining the X-Men as the armored mutant, Colossus! In his organic steel form, Colossus becomes nearly invincible.
Spiral
A warrior sorceress of great power and evil from Mojo World, she uses six-armed attacks and variety and speed to compensate for weaker individual strikes. Players must master her Dancing Sword technique to survive against her.
Silver Samurai
An armored master of Japanese sword techniques and a member of the Yashida clan, he channels mutant powers through his sword to make attacks lethal and break through guards.
Omega Red
A super soldier created by Soviet secret forces who, after being sealed away for 30 years, kills without mercy to absorb the life force of his victims using carbonadium whips.
Sentinel
Robots designed to seek out and eliminate mutants, moving slowly but possessing incredible power, long reach, and the ability to withstand heavy attacks. They have no emotion or understanding.
Juggernaut
Transformed by the ruby of Cytarak into a being of unstoppable evil, he is slow but possesses unparalleled attack and defense strength.
Magneto
The malevolent Master of Magnetism who seeks to dominate mankind and bring about a world under mutant control, using Earth's magnetic fields to destroy his opponents.
